When I ask my kids why they like going tuna fishing with their dad, I get a super simple answer, “Because it’s fun.” One of the last trips they took together this summer, my 14-year old daughter wanted to catch some squid. We love calamari and we love cooking, so what better way to practice making calamari then by making it with squid that my daughter caught? They accomplished their goal and brought over 40 squid home along with a big tuna fish and some mackerel.
Fishing, and everything that goes with fishing, does not stay contained out in the Atlantic or Pacific or Gulf or wherever. It has tentacles that extend onto the shore into the coastal communities and the homes of fishing families and captures hearts and messes with the mind. So, I sort and organize and tidy up.
I think the best part of being married to a lobsterman is that we can set our own schedule and we own our own business. There is great freedom in that aspect. I think being a lobster fisherman is one of the coolest jobs because you are on the ocean all day where you never know what you get to see or catch; it's beautiful and I have so much appreciation for it! I tell Carroll that all the time -- it is so unique.
